"Autumn Leaves" is one of those timeless jazz standards that everyone seems to know, whether they realize it or not. The tune actually started as a French song called “Les Feuilles Mortes” (“The Dead Leaves”), written in 1945 by composer Joseph Kosma with lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert. Later, Johnny Mercer added the English lyrics we usually hear today. It quickly became a favorite among jazz musicians because of its beautiful, melancholic melody and the cycle of ii–V–I progressions. It’s often one of the first standards people learn since it’s both approachable and full of the ii V7 harmonic movement.
