7 Days To Jazz

Improvisation

For Classical Musicians - finally make sense of jazz, using the theory and skills you already have.

Sound Familiar?

  • You've spent years mastering classical technique, but the moment someone says "just improvise," your mind goes blank.

  • You can read anything on the page, but a lead sheet with chord symbols feels like a foreign language.

  • You've tried watching YouTube tutorials, but nothing connects the dots between what you already know and what jazz actually requires.

  • You want to play with other musicians, but you're afraid of "playing the wrong note."

What’s Inside

  • Day 1 - Guide Tones and Time Feel

Learn the 3rds and 7ths that guide your ear through any chord progression, plus your first two chord improvisation flow.

  • Day 2 - Vocabulary from the Masters

Pay homage to the masters with some licks pulled from Curtis Fuller’s solo on John Coltrane’s “Blue Train.”

  • Day 3 - 4 - Blue Monk

Learn the melody to Thelonious Monk’s “Blue Monk,” then improvise over the form using licks from Day 2.

  • Day 5 - Minor Pentatonic Scale

Learn the sound that powers the blues style in all 12 keys, written out for you with sheet music.

  • Day 6 - 7 - Sonnymoon for Two

Learn Sonny Rollins’ melody and pull everything together in your improvised solo.

  • BONUS: Backing Tracks and Community

Practice with video tutorials, play along videos, and backing tracks in the Jazz Improv Institute Community.

Meet the Creator

Shannon Gunn

Hi, I’m Shannon. I’ve been a professional jazz trombone player for over 15 years, with performance credits including:

  • 🎶 The Kennedy Center

  • 🎶 DC Jazz Festival

  • 🎶 Teaching jazz at the college level for 4 years

After coaching hundreds of students, I kept hearing the same thing:

“What can I play over a ii V7?”

“What should I play over a V7?”

“What are some ideas over a minor ii7(b5) V7(b9) i?”

So I built a resource for all improvisers—from the ground up.

I am endorsed by Conn Selmer and play a Bach 16M New York Model. I play on a Greg Black mouthpiece.
