Sonnymoon for Two Rhythm Chart

Below you will find the rhythm chart for Sonny Rollin’s “Sonnymoon for Two.”

As a rhythm section player, you don’t comp on the head of this tune - you play the rhythm of the melody.

If you play bass, you can either play the roots or the melody.

If you play a chordal instrument, you will play Bb blues chords with the rhythm of the melody.

If you play drums, you will want to set up the 3rd, 7th, and 11th measures, as in the recording. There are three eighth notes.

Check out the first chorus of Emmet’s Place as an example of what to do during the head on a jam session. Notice how Nicholas Peyton reharmonizes the second time through the head, and how the rhythm section reacts. There is so much artistry in their session!

It’s important to always listen to the original version of a tune before you learn it. In jazz, we learn more by ear than by looking at a sheet of paper. The sheet music is helpful, in terms of remembering details, but the nuances and true understanding comes from the recording more so than the paper.
